3 Day Potty Training- Yay Kal-el!

So here we are at a MAJOR milestone in a young childs life....the infamous..sometimes dreaded and feared POTTY TRAINING! Kal-el has been showing signs lately that he is ready to start. WE as in Chris and I thought we would begin and end this process when he turned two. He just wasn't ready and I'm a firm believer in not pushing the issue if you know it's just not going to click with your child. I find that it leads to MORE accidents all over the place and just frustrates the parent and child.Still we wanted to see if he was one of the few who would take to it right away. Our pediatrician informed us at Super's two year appointment to not be surprised if it didn't go as planned. He said it just takes longer with boys and most boys aren't ready to begin the process until about 2.5 years of age. Some parents start extremely early and consider their child "trained" even before the age of two. Unlike many of those parents I don't consider a child potty trained if they are still wearing pull ups, having several accidents throughout the day, and still bed wetting frequently during the night or nap time, or if the child is only able to effectively make #1 in the potty :) I also feel like if your taking your child to the potty every 20 mins then YOU are potty trained NOT the child. My definition is probably a little more rigid and therefore I'm more reserved in labeling my child or any child "potty trained". Kal-el has been using the potty for months now. He has never had an issue going when we sit him there. His issue dealt more with consistency and understanding his urges and mainly communicating to US when he needed to go. I decided last week to make a sticker chart for him in hopes to add a little motivation and incentive for going potty. This worked well at first until my independent child tried to take over the system and hand out stickers to his father and I when we went LOL. He also tried demanding a sticker FIRST! That system wasn't the most effective for him. Bribery tends to make Kal-el a little angry! He also likes to feel like he's in control and only wants to go if he thinks of it NOT if we suggest it. Which means if he's playing or watching cartoons or preoccupied in anyway he uses his diaper and asks me to immediately change him. I knew at that point he was ready to take the next step. I finally got to the point where I wanted to be completely rid of diapers. I had a couple of friends online suggest the 3 day potty training boot camp. I thought it couldn't hurt to give it a try because up until this point we hadn't been using any specific method. I wasn't so much concerned with getting it completely accomplished in 3 days because having a psychology background I understand that conditioning can often vary especially where children are concerned. I did realise, however, that this would be a great way to hold me accountable and give it our best effort for 3 days!
After digesting all the knowledge in the book I agreed with MUCH of the program right away. I hate pull ups and have always considered them a crutch, as a matter of fact up until we started this Kal-el has been in regular diapers. I think really they confuse children..especially older ones. I was certainly on board with throwing all diapers away. It only makes since if you don't want to encourage regression in times of desperation. I also agreed with the constant reminders and the way they are phrased to your child. Instead of asking "Do you have to use the bathroom/go potty?" in question form you approach the child with a statement like "Don't forget to tell Mommy and Daddy when you have to go potty". Small verbal tweaks like this help children feel more accomplished and in control. Super = control freak= like Mommy :) There is LOTS of positive reinforcement with this program which is usually quite effective. I'll be honest in regards to my child though..I really have to not overdo it because I find that he gets bored of it VERY fast, looks at me like I've lost my mind, and opts for a more extreme reaction out of me.. at times even if it takes negative behavior. He's just naturally curious and a tad mischievous. I have to try extra hard to find that middle ground with him.
Chris had a couple of days off and since the system required constant supervision of our child to be effective we took advantage and started right away. The idea is too watch for his "cues" that he's about to relieve himself and then transfer him while in the act to the potty. Simple enough. Condition using the bathroom with going on the potty using repeated exposure type behavioral therapy basically. Still the child has to be able to make the connection so you want to do the transfer as quickly as possible. I consider the last 3 days to be a real success and Chris and I are extremely proud of Kal-el.
Day 1 : He only had 3 accidents. Chris ended up having to take over the evening of the first day..not because I was gave up but because the first accident of the day had me so over eager to get to him that I literally FELL..on his pee no less, and was unable to break my entire fall and hit my head on the hard wood floor. FAIL. Of these accidents I'm proud to report that two of them he caught himself mid pee and said "go potty" so he definitely caught on from day 1. He even managed to make #2 the first day( I know you will NOT like this post when your older..but we all poo son ). Day 1 was spent in white undies that he received as a stocking stuffer this year. We thought it would be even better to introduce some character underwear. Other parents rave on and on about what a big difference this makes. I called my mom and had her bring some over since you basically not allowed to leave the house for 3 days on the system.

Day 2: Kal-el woke up dry! Hooray! We decided to introduce his new big boy underwear. He LOVED them. Umm perhaps a little too much. He acted like a diva and had the audacity to ask me the following " I pee on dis, then get to put these ones on now" How in the world did he put that plan together so fast?!? I had to finally make him pick one pair out and informed him to keep them dry while I hid the rest. His success continued for day 2! Only two accidents...one was pretty rough but he managed to finish in the potty. He's never completely emptied himself anywhere but the potty since we've started. I'm thrilled with the fact that he catches himself in the act and understands he needs to get to the bathroom.

Day 3 : Once again Super woke up dry! This thrills me almost more than anything..no pee on sheets...major plus! He did not have one single accident all day long!!! He has also very effective communicated to us when he needs to go potty. Day 3 was obviously a major break through and things have really clicked now!

Overall I really like this system and would certainly recommend it. I will say that I don't expect complete no turning back success in a matter of 3 days. On the face it does seem to work in "3 days" After all Kal-el went from 3 accidents to 0 on day 3 HOWEVER the system only allows for variables inside the home and fails to take into account outside stimulus. This stimulus may or may not affect all children just as using different pottys may or may not play a role in their training. I'm anxious to see how Kal-el does once we are out and about and actually wearing pants over our big boy underwear and going on trips and car rides etc. Either way I love being his support system and I could not be more happy and proud for him. He has done amazingly well in a matter of 72 hours. Three short days ago our home was full of size 6 diapers. I'm not going to lie I made a little frown face when I typed that. My baby is growing up but maybe not too fast ...at least he still has cartoons on his underpants :) Congratulations Kal-el Borquez!

Heart "Tatt Tatt!"

Last night when I gave my oldest little superhero his bath he refused to let me wash his arm. Heather had some adorable little "Mom <3" temporary tattoos" that she used for the last part of their shoot yesterday. Kal-el loved the "sticker" and was even more thrilled when he discovered it wouldn't come off easily! He originally thought it was an "apple"...my child loves apples..and I LOVE that he loves them. I had to inform him that it was actually a heart. He liked it even more after that. Super actually knows ALL of his shapes....right down to Octagon and Hexagon. He's a smart cookie ..especially if you can even get him still long enough to talk to him! I love that I'm a stay at home mommy and have the time to work with him on these things ..if we can just get potty training down will be in good shape! Ok back to the tatts :) Kal-el wants to wear his shirt sleeve rolled up or OFF so we can all see his little heart on his arm. He calls it a "tatt tatt" and just in case we forget its there he reminds us every couple of hours. Sweet little Logan has one on his arm too...not that he cares...if it's not a bottle he's really just not into it! :) I let him keep his on for one more day also just because I think it's too cute and it will be the ONLY ink they have for a very long time. I don't even really like the temporary ones all that much. I just have to say a little silent prayer that IF and WHEN they do get drawn on as adults whatever they get MEANS something and it's not some gross random animal, some trashy old english gangsta tattoo knowing their from TUSCUMBIA ALABAMA lol, or a language (Chinese symbol) they don't even speak. Sorry boys I'll stop..ONLY in fear if I press on when your 16.5 you'll delberiately get a huge tiger with thug life written under it or something crazier ;) Scripture and "Mom" are fine lol! It's times like these I'm thankful I don't have a girl. I don't mean to have a double standard but if SHE came home with anything...especially a butterfly or stars I'd most likely have a meltdown! Ok back to reality I have a toddler and baby right now..whew...It's completely precious when Super looks down and says "pretty heart tatt tatt Mommy." He compares it to his Daddy's tattoos..which are totally faboulous ..because they are MY name and MY lips.and other meaningful things. He asked me to take a picture of it tonight. I'm actually glad he had this idea...now Kal-el can forever look upon it with fond memories....when I wash it off ...in his sleep tonight! ;)

Picture Day with my Little Heartbreakers

Today Mom and I took the boys to Moulton to shoot Valentine's day themed pictures with HMP Studios. I found both my sweet guys super cute outfits for the occasion so I've really been looking forward to this shoot. I don't EVER remember getting anywhere near this excited for ANY of my own shoots. I have so much fun with them. While it may be a little harder to find unique fashion in the retail world for little boys it CAN be done! :) I found a shirt that I loved for Kal-el online. It was simple but adorable. "Ladies love me" with a large felt heart in the middle. It ALMOST didn't arrive to our house on time for today's shoot. It literally arrived about an hour before we left. My mom managed to make a back up the night before. She did a great job and he almost wore her version instead. The shirts were almost identical. The lettering was just a little more pigmented looking in the one I ordered so we went with that one for pictures. We now we have two great shirts! :) Thanks Mimsy! The one thing that didn't arrive on time were Kal-el's red suspenders. A back up could not be found anywhere locally. Then, as photography fate would have it lol I found MY old red Mickey Mouse suspenders. Mickey is on the back and not visible from the front so it worked perfectly! Logan's outfit was a hit as well. The only hard part was keeping his leg warmers up over those sweet chubby legs of his!
Both boys did a great job with their pictures and I can't wait to see them and share them! In the mean time here are a few we took before we left the house. :)

Popeyes Please!

This morning Kal-el had a rather unusual request. I started my day off with a warm bath. Our original intentions were to try and make it to church despite Chris's all nighter on a train. While I was trying to enjoy my bath Kal-el kept walking back and forth to the bathroom. I could tell my his demeaner that he was in rare form. He looked down and ask me about my "big scratch" (my c-section scar). I told him thats where the doctor cut Logan out of a few months ago. Kal-el didn't like this response and after a little thought on the matter he declared "Logan mean, I spank him!" I told him thats where HE himself came from and he had to be cut out the same way. He seemed to think when it involved him the same story and manner of birth was actually hysterical. Little meany lol :) He left the bathroom a few minutes later carrying a few things in this arms that I assumed were his toys. A few seconds later I here Chris wake up out of a sound sleep and shout..."what is going on?!" Ok so thats not exactly how he worded it at the time but you get the idea. I walked in our bedroom..hot relaxing bath interrupted...to find my husband... not so relaxed and covered in water..along with our sheets, pillows etc. Seconds later I find our first born superhero huddled in a corner laughing and still armed with his weapons of choice. Water toys from the bath were gripped tightly in his little hands. I should of known something was off when I bathed and there were ZERO toys surrounding me. By the time all the commotion settled we would have been more than just a little late for church. We opted to stay home and figure out what we wanted to do for lunch. Here enters Kal-el's odd request. Chris asked him if he was hungry. His reply was "Yes, Daddy I'm hungry eat Popeyes. Kal-el eat popeyes. Chris and I both laughed...mainly because Super has NEVER had Popeyes in his life. We really doubted he even knew what it was. I looked over at Chris and said "Oh I think he's saying he wants a POPTART" This interpretation was met with an unknown flying object that missed my face by mere inches and a frustrated toddler protest..."No No No Kal-el NO want pop tart MOMMA" Sheesh..ok...OK. Chris asked him again what he was hungry for. This time he simply looked up and smiled and announced "Chicken!...Popeeye's puleeze" The rest of the story is history. We ended up having lunch at Popeye's Chicken. Nannie and Poppa even joined us. Very random Sunday lunch. We never go there but somehow my child..who is not really around anyone but me most days ..got in his head that he NEEDED to have chicken from there today. All I can come up with is perhaps he's seen a commercial. It's hard to say because I really don't recall seeing one lately. Once we got there he manged to eat his ENTIRE meal of FOUR chicken tenders, fries , and a biscuit. I guess he knew what he wanted. He pays attention to much more than we realise. I'm almost scared to ask him what he wants for dinner tonight ;)

January Storms!

This past Sunday night the Borquez family sought shelter from the unlikely January storms over at Zach and Lea's house. Their basement grew a family! Luckily, it didn't get as bad as expected...for us anyway..some areas got hit pretty hard. South of us, near the Birmingham area reported a good deal of damage and a 16 year old girl perished. It's been unseasonably warm this winter so I was kind of in fear the weather might start to do something very unpredictable. I never remember being so afraid of storms in my life. It all started with my Logan pregnancy...BEFORE April 27th. Of course my anxiety got much worse after that horrible day. We have a regular home but it doesn't have a basement. When Chris and I start home shopping (we've REALLY outgrown this one) a BASEMENT is certainly on the WANT list! Hopefully this will be the last round of inclement weather until Spring arrives! I also want to share some beautiful pictures of the sky at sunset the very next day. It was one of the most beautiful ones I've ever seen and a positive note after the storm.

Kal-el Wishes Blaise & Aurora A Happy Birthday!

Saturday Kal-el had the pleasure of attending Blaise and Aurora's 1st and 3rd birthday parties! Chris trains with their daddy, also named Chris. These too adorable siblings are birthday twins. I think it would be unique and so much fun to share a birthday with a sibling. Kal-el had an absolute BLAST at the party. The event took place at Forrest Jumps. Super had never been there before so Chris and I really looked forward to watching him play and interact. When we first arrived we took Kal-el over to meet Blaise. It took him a little while to warm up to his new surroundings but there was no stopping him after the initial 20 minutes. He played HARD and was on EVERYTHING. I tried to help him go down the big slide because I thought he was just a little young to do that one alone. It apperaed to be just the older kids using that part of the facility. My attempts to help him, both going up the latter and the ride back down were met with a barrage of kicks and punches followed by "Kal-el do it, I can do it, NO NO NO Mommy...go AWAY!" Umm ok son, that wasn't embarrassing. Mr. Independent.
If I thought that was the only funny/embarrassing thing we would have to endure for the night I was so very mistaken lol ;) For starters, when we first arrived Chris and I were under the impression that we could get in the smaller bouncy with our child...you know just until he got familiar with it. After attempting to go up the smallest blow up ladder there...unsuccessfully...a grand total of four times *I* gave up. Yes, me....not my athletic son but his overgrown Mom who was told a few short minutes later that "parents weren't allowed to "jump." Ooops ;) I should note that Kal-el managed to get up it the first time my himself. Thank you Chris Borquez for the athletic genes, your son really appreciates them. Next up, cake time. But not before Super eyes candy at the far end of the room and has a mini meltdown over it. Our sweet hosts went ahead and let him have one of the bags. It ended up working nicely as bribery long enough to get him to sit still for a group picture. I happen to notice that there were PEANUT M&M's in the bag right as cameras started flashing away. I almost bit my bottom lip off and prayed he wouldn't get them open. Don't think I wouldn't of nose dived into the floor if he managed to get the choke hazard out of the tightly wrapped bag. Luckily after picture time Blaise and Aurora's lovely Mommy Carmen, came over and replaced the older kids Candy bag with the age appropriate one for toddlers. Kal-el didn't mind the trade off because the new bag had Superwhy on it so all was well. The only thing left for Super to endure was the birthday song. He can't stand to hear people sing it. I don't even know were these aversion came from. Perhaps its because his Mommy is tone deaf. Poor child had to hear the birthday song, not once, don't twice but a grand total of THREE times in one day Saturday. First at Zach's birthday lunch and then at the double birthday party that same evening. It was enough to send him over the edge. All three times he flung himself to the floor. Yep, here's the visual...happy children eating cake and singing Happy Birthday...my child..on the floor with hands over his ears, rolling around like its a stop drop and roll fire drill. Nice! The chaos is what all the fun is about though and Kal-el played so hard that his legs and the rest rest of his little muscles ached all night. He got a workout and didn't wake up until nearly 9' o'clock the next morning. Thanks so much for having us, Chris & Carmen...we had a great time!

Yesterday was my first cousin Zach's birthday. He and I were best buddies growing up and sometimes sibling- like adversaries! Our childhood years were spent playing and fighting nonstop for HOURS at Nannies house. We were most often X-men characters...him = Beast (kinda by force, sorry Z) and me..Psylocke. If he ever got an edge on me in our imaginary world I was QUICK to pull out my good ol "imaginary powers." I have countless fond memories of growing up together. I hope he feels the same ..minus the elves I told him resided in his underwear drawer at night..aaand I hope he can also look over the fact I convinced him our grandparents were ALIENS for a few months. I love you Beast. Wishing you MANY more Happy Birthdays and a crazy family to enjoy them with!

Yes to Carpe Diem!

Be forewarned this is a very opinionated post. If you were in whole hearted agreement with the "Don't Carpe Diem" parenting article you will probably NOT like this rebuttal. Ok disclaimer over. :)
The following article begin popping up all over the internet.. "Don't Carpe Diem". Several facebook mommy friends kept going on about how great and wonderful it was. The first time I pulled it up I didn't read it. It was a little lengthy and I had a toddler making war paint on his face with his Mcdonalds honey mustard nugget sauce. I managed to find the time a little later in the day. Within the first few paragraphs I honestly thought I was going to love the read. It seemed like it was geared towards well meaning individuals who love to give unsolicited advice...which I despise. Older woman always look at me like I have sooo much to learn based on an outward appearance ,very few people pick up on the fact that I'm an "old soul" until they get to know me. I was more than ready to side with the writer. WAS... until I kept reading. I kept waiting on the "ah ha" or "YES! Thats me!" moment but it never happened. NONE of the article resonated with me. It left me feeling pretty empty. I read it again..and then once more. I found myself getting more annoyed every time I read it. I had to sleep on it to find what really agitated me the most. So here goes....

I have always loved the simple quote Carpe Diem..."seize the day" I have never consciously made more of an effort to seize the day and steal more life out of every breath then I did the day I became a mother. It is quite honestly the very BEST thing in the world. Simple but true. I've NEVER once in my time as a mother ever felt like I needed a break from my children. Not Ever. My children aren't perfect..nor am I ...not by a long shot. But I honestly find myself thanking God even when my child manages to throw himself to the floor in the midst of a tantrum even in public. No I'm not kidding. He shares my passion for life. Maybe its because of my psychology background and the understanding of the different emotional phases he'll go through in his toddler years. Or maybe its the fact that I see parenting my children as not a "tough job" but an honor. I've literally uttered "Thank you God ...he's so ALIVE, passionate and healthy" in not so pleasant fits at a store. Thats not to say I don't parent him. I'm very big on discipline but I never do it with a "woe is me" frame of mind. I'm GRATEFUL for EVERY SINGLE MOMENT. I'm much more inclined to get aggravated with know- it- all nosy adults that try to recommend appropriate disciplinary actions for someone elses child than I am a person that manages to look over lovingly at me while I parent my children in the midst of a difficult situation and say "oh how I miss those days and you will to" Maybe that's because I know its TRUE and that person also loved being a parent the way I do. I just can't help but feel like mothers should try to be a little more insightful. Not one of us nor our children are promised another day. I'm not trying to sound grim but its a fact of life. Ask a mother who has recently lost a child or the mother of a child with disabilities how much they would love to have a child throw a tantrum or be well. We don't have any choice but to live in the moment..it may be all we have. It's naive and pompous to brush things off like they won't or can't happen to any one of us at any given time.

I don't understand how the effort at being "real" is so praised in this article. That along with the analogies I find the most unsettling so I'll give a few of my own. Here is the writers idea of being "real" and helping moms feel less isolated in their parenting.

"It's helluva hard, isn't it? You're a good mom, I can tell. And I like your kids, especially that one peeing in the corner. She's my favorite. Carry on, warrior. Six hours till bedtime." And hopefully, every once in a while, I'll add -- "Let me pick up that grocery bill for ya, sister. Go put those kids in the van and pull on up -- I'll have them bring your groceries out."

How do I hate this..let me count the ways.....Here's my idea of being real. There have been nights where my little guy has been so out of control that Chris and I have had to look at each other and laugh followed by a "wow he's kicking our asses" lol The writer also goes on to say that her favorite part of the day is at the end of the day when are kids are in the bed and she and her husband tell each other "job well done " or just "job done"....Again, really? Your favorite part of the day is when your children are sleeping?!?

I just think my generation is so spoiled and selfish with their "me me me " time. A child never needs a break from it's parent ...why do you need a break from your child?? I'm really not trying to make this sound like an elitist, judgmental post but it's a very emotionally charged subject for me. I'm just disgusted with articles that are geared towards helping women survive motherhood and their OWN children. To me the love between a mother and child is the closest thing we have on this earth to understanding God's unconditional love. I can't imagine God complaining about "oh these humans ..phew their A LOT of work" Thats because his love is so great. I'm so humbled and grateful that I was given the opportunity to be a mother that I can't bear the thought of complaining about how "hard" it is. I won't even go into the Mt Everest and job analogies the writer references. Umm raising a human being is a little different than climbing a mountain and IF you feel that the role even remotely resembles a treacherous climb up a steep set of never ending hard rocks then thats a shame. Furthermore even comparing this amazing journey to a career 9-5 is a joke.

The ONE thing that I will NOT miss about my children being young is the times when they are sick or not well. I can deal with a tantrum, a ruined dinner, and other toddler challenges but I can't make a sick child well again. AND those moments are when they have the LEAST amount of life. Thats the hard part for me. I truly believe that these are the BEST years of a woman's life..seriously even the hard parts are blissful..you don't have to agree. And if you happen not to share this belief system that's perfectly fine to. I'm aware that the article received rave reviews by many and I'm probably in the minority. I'm still sharing my heart and because this blog is for my kids I want them to understand my take on parenting them. So to the elderly woman in the line at the grocery store who days of parenting little people is long gone I don't mind you looking at me or my children with yearning, re mincing eyes...and I don't mind you telling me to seize the day...but what you may not know is that I've probably already done it today...at least ten times before lunch :) I'm not perfect but I hope my children will always see me as cut out for this ~~job~~ honor.

Logan is 7 Months Old!

Our sweetheart Logan turned 7 months old today. Unreal. He is now closer to being a toddler and leaving his newborn and infant stage behind. His personality is still non stop sweetness and he still looks like a baby doll. He and his big brother have been sick little boys this month. Logan had to endure the dreaded RSV, along with a double ear infection, teething, followed by another secondary upper respiratory infection a few days later. He literally smiled through ALL of it. I told a family member that's its almost scary ...I'm VERY in tuned to my children especially when they aren't well but Logan is very hard to read when something is wrong. Had it not been for a slight runny nose and cough I probably would of never thought anything of it. He was nothing short of happy through it all. I always comment on what a precious easy going personality he has but I'm also seeing how tough this baby boy is!
We are working on sitting up this month. He has had the strength for quite awhile now but I decided to work on balance a little more with him. He sits up but he feels like he has to be leaning all the over(think tummy touching his feet) to maintain balance. When he gets tired of sitting that way he whimpers and cuts his eyes back at me as if to say "Would you please get me Mommy, I'm about to spill!" :) When he's put in the pack and play he's pretty much on all fours so I feel like crawling is definitely around the corner for him! My favorite thing that he does right now is without a doubt the way he stares at one of us ...mostly his big brother...he literally locks eyes until one of us looks back at him. He then laughs hysterically, chuckles to himself and starts "talking" and cooing non stop. He LOVES to interact with us now. He is a very special member of our little family and very much loved. Happy 7 months baby Logan. We <3 you!

Logan's First Tooth!

It's all the way through now..a sweet, little, white sparkling baby tooth. Cuteness factor = 12 out of 10 :) Honestly, I hardly even knew Logan was teething. Which is unusual in itself but add recovering from RSV AND an upper respiratory infection to that list and you'll see why he is BEYOND precious! He's been all smiles this entire week. I've been trying to get pictures organized this week. I have so many that it's unreal. I don't print most of them because they go in my blog blog books and I have almost every picture we have ever taken and stories to go along with them. The only pictures that I have prints of are the ones we've had done professionally because I keep a portfolio for both Kal-el and Logan but even those are starting to add up. I ran across Kal-el's 6 month shoot today and I thought I'd share it. I've been meaning to do comparison pictures by age anyway. I just think its so much fun to look at the differences and similarities between siblings. I rejoice about the traits that make each of my sweet little guys' unique and different. We didn't do pro pics for Logan's 6 months because honestly I prefer 9 months and the one year shoots. I'm also really looking forward to an upcoming Valentine's Day shoot with HMP studios with both my little heart breakers! <3 Here are both boys at 6 months!

I See The Moon....

"And the moon sees me, God bless the moon, and God bless me!" Kal-el has been a "moon gazer" for the better part of 3 months. The first time he ever really noticed it was when he was in the midst of learning the alphabet. We were heading home one evening and there was a half moon over the horizon. Super squealed with delight followed by an audible gasp and announced proudly "Look Mommy D moon" At first I thought he was saying 'D' to reference the article "the." I soon realised (after much protest from him) that he was actually referring to the shape of the moon itself. Full moons are " O Moon's" etc. It's really adorable. He looks for the moon every time the sun goes down.
Super doesn't have to look to far and wide anymore thanks to a gift he received for Christmas. Mom and Larry got Kal-el a moon to hang in ~~his~~ our bedroom ;) Now he can see the moon anytime his heart desires, even during the day. The best part of all is that it comes with a little remote control that controls the various lunar phases! All he has to do is press one button and it takes him through the cycles. It's really neat! He usually prefers the full moon setting ..go figure :) Every night before we fall asleep we always recite "I see the Moon" <3 <3 <3

Keeping Up With Kal-el- January :)

Yes, yes I know...I haven't done one of these in awhile but I realized I really need to start back. Primarily because it's the little things that we not only tend to forget but are often times the very things we hold most dear to our hearts. I certainly don't want to miss these sweet details of our daily lives. Kal-el's personality has grown leaps and bounds if thats even possible. He's truly a unique child. I'm aware I'm biased because he's mine but its just so true. Every single day is an absolute adventure with him. My days are filled with exhaustion and true happiness and I wouldn't have it any other way. Here's some of my favorites from the past few months :)

-My child is fascinated by the moon...he LOVES it. He's also pretty fond of stars but nothing beats the moon in his eyes!

-He is very familiar with gender now. Labeling everyone "boy" or "girl" accordingly. He very much prefers pointing out girls....oh meeeee...lol...the one exception to this is....

- He loves watching Charlie Brown...One day he saw a commercial for a cartoon that he was positively frantic to watch. I didn't see the commercial so when he was yelling at me that he wanted to "watch boy Mommy" with an eye full of tears I had NO clue what he meant. A few day later we caught the preview again and it was Charlie Brown. I need to buy him a dvd. Charlie Brown never comes on and I've purchased $3.99 OnDemand rentals more time than I care to confess!

- He's favorite color is most definitely Green ...he has recently taken a real interest in coloring and often times he will leave the green and Yellow crayon (he's second favorite) out of the box and hold them through out the day. It's also not uncommon for him to carry those two to bed with him.

- If you think he's given up Pluto you must be crazy :) I have GOT to get a backup HOWEVER I've had more than one parent tell me that he WILL know the difference....I'm scared ;)

- Super has been counting for quite awhile now...He usually stops at 13 or 14. He's favorite number is 8! He also uses it to refer "many" or "a bunch" of items. When I bake cookies he tells me he wants eight ;)

- His use of the word "pretty" is positively heart melting...He used it often last month to reference Christmas lights. Shiny things or items embellished with bows or even his bouncy balls that light up are "pretty". He also calls new clothes I put on him "pretty". Sooo sweet!

- He really enjoys making Logan laugh. He understands that we are family. In the rare event that we go somewhere without Logan (trips to the store etc before his 6 months shots etc) Kal-el would repeatedly ask for "Logan" I hope they are always this close <3

- "Mrs. Cobblepot" is a phrase he sneakingly says often.... inside family joke...I don't want to forget lol :)

- He is still very good at using his manners..to be so lively and rambunctious and some times defiant about other things he says please and thank you without fail. Makes me smile. He has also started saying "sorry" however this is usually last minute and in an effort to avoid corporal punishment ;) "Wait, wait" is also cried out in protest to impending disciplinary action. It's extremely difficult not to laugh at his antics.

- He loves going to the doctor...he really likes Dr. Melvin..it's the one place he usually minds...or at least when he comes in the room...the wait, aftermath, and journey back to the car are often a different story :)

- We bought him some batman boxing gloves as one of his Christmas gifts...he loves them...too much....my ribs and butt regret this purchase. ;) When he puts them on ...he says "I fight Mommy now..or I fight Daddy now" At least he gives us a heads up lol

- He can now recognize the sequence of events when his Daddy gets called for work...after "the call' he follows Chris around like a little Duck (Oregon :) and when he sees him put on his boots he asked "you gotta go to work Daydeeee?!" He's still a Daddy's boy and will still tell you that if you ask him <3

-If he drops anything on the floor he ask for "clean one" ...told you he is MY child....although I'll eat a yummy cookie off my floor anytime lol ...judge away :D

- Every night when he takes his bath ..he will lay down in the tub and kick his arms and legs and say..."Look Mommy I swimmin!!!" :)

- I tell him I love him every night and every night his sweet little response, without fail, is a coy little grin, little eyes that cut over mischievously , and a little mouth that proclaims "Kal-el LOVES PLUTO!" lol After three tries I usually get an I love you back but not before his love for his worn out plush pet is declared!

- And last but not least he is still so in love with "Sponge Pants" that there is no way that I couldn't give him a 3rd birthday party in that theme....speaking of which...my BABY will be THREE in two months!

Last Game Of The Season!

Last night was Oregon's last game of the season. I was thrilled that Chris was off to watch it with us and even more thrilled that our Ducks are 2012 Rose Bowl Champions! The Ducks haven't had a rose bowl championship title in 95 years! So it was definitely a good night of football :) Kal-el was WILD and loved every single minute of the excitement. Every time Chris or I would yell about a play he would follow suit and run all over the place screaming with excitement and asking for Puddles. Logan actually LOVES to watch football on the screen. It always gets his attention, so does the yelling. My poor little one cried at least 3 times :( We would have to run and cuddle him then go back to the game. Sweet man finally got used to the chaos. In a couple of years he'll be running all over the place just like his big brother. As the biggest GIRL I know I can't believe I'm saying this BUT..I'm kind of sad we won't get to see them play again until September. At least we ended this season on a high note..hoping for even bigger things next year. Until then....Kal-el says "See you later Puddles!"

New Years Eve was spent just the way I like it...with my two handsome baby boys! That I also might mention are completely WELL again. Thank God the virus has left our home its been a rough, sleep deprived 2 weeks. The absolute last thing I had any desire to do was stay up til the stroke of midnight! We baked cookies in our pjs, ate pizza and watched Happy Feet until we couldn't stay up any longer. I hate that Chris wasn't home with us. He got called to take a train to Memphis earlier in the day. I missed him just like any regular day though. New Years, or at least the eve part, has never really felt like a holiday day to me. Frankly, it annoys me a little. I think it's the resolution part that bugs me the most. I've never understood waiting until Jan 1st rolls around to change something or make an improvement that needs to be made NOW. Life is just too precious and too short to put important things off. Also, some people will use any excuse to party and go crazy. To me, it kind of negates the changes you plan on making if you completely waste away the last day of the year. The one tradition I DO like is a midnights kiss :( Guess I'll have to get that today some time. At least we were able to talk at midnight...screaming trains in the background and all lol!
2011 has been a wonderful year for our family. The highlight of this year would definitely be adding our newest family family member, sweet baby Logan, and Kal-el getting the new title of "brother" added to his resume. Along with Superhero, of course. :) I can't wait to see what 2012 holds for our family. I won't try to count my blessings, because they are too many, far more than I deserve BUT I'm so thankful and grateful for each and everyone one of them. Most importantly, my family and I can't wait to see what this year has in store for us. So bring it on 2012...We're ready! Happy New Year's from the Borquez family and God Bless your journeys in this new year!

I'm completely OVER all of this sickness that's effected the Borquez family this holiday season! My sweet Superman has finally gotten over his illness..it got worse before it got better. The virus caused a small place of pneumonia on his right lung. It was a very TINY area and was not heard when his chest was listened to. Thanks goodness I insisted on a chest xray. But now my little Logan has RSV. Yep, that's correct. I was a little panicked when his nose culture came back positive. I'm still a nervous wreck HOWEVER this illness happens to fall under the category of "this should be better explained to parents". As enlightening as doing your own research can be its also like holding your breath and waiting on the bad news. Thank God thats not always the case. RSV is an extremely common virus thats extremely contagious. Here's the status for you. 90% of ALL children will have had RSV by the time they are 3. 100% of children in daycare will develop it before the age of one. Why the fear factor then? Because it can be really bad for certain babies. Mainly those with risk factors such as premature birth, heart, lung, immune issues or if a child has an unknown propensity for asthma. So while its still a bit scary its more normal than not to contract it early. The most common age range is 2-6 months. I'm so grateful that he fell on the high end of the age ranges and doesn't have any risk factors. Since Logan was around absolutely no one except his big brother this is almost undoubtedly the same virus. The incubation periods and symptoms are a perfect match. In a way this makes me feel MUCH better knowing that Kal-el had RSV as well. WHY you ask? I had questioned why a "normal" run of the mill virus would effect Super so adversely and take take him nearly a full week to recuperate from. My main concern was that a random virus went to his lung. I had all sorts of immune system concerns. Those were put to rest with Logan's RSV diagnosis. RSV is notorious for causing all kinds of upper respiratory issues and pneumonia is certainly not uncommon. In other words, Kal-el acted accordingly to a virus that was a little more "mean" then what we thought we were dealing with. The thing is we would of never even known that the virus Kal-el was fighting was RSV without Logan's diagnosis because doctors don't routinely test anyone over the age of two. There is just no need. It doesn't cause the extreme adverse effects in adults and older children that it can in small babies. Often in adults it wont cause much more than a sniffle and clear runny nose.
So far so good with Logan. The virus takes about a week to 10 days to recover from. He's had NO wheezing, NO shortness of breath, and NO fever. :) They only thing I'm really having to stay on top of is keeping him suctioned out really well and keeping a close eye on his cough. For MOST babies this is typical and they won't get much worse then this. Yet another "fact" parents should be informed of! Since RSV is viral there are no meds that treat it. It just has to run it's course. According to my math(hold your laughter) we are on day 6 of the virus. Day 5 is supposed to be the worst so hopefully we have already been though the most difficult day. The biggest lesson I've learned in these past couple of weeks is ....I simply can not, no matter how hard I try protect my children from everything. This is especially true in regards to microscopical viruses and bacteria..no matter how much hand sanitizer and Lysol I fill a room with! I'm a stay at home Mom and I do try to keep their exposure to a minimal. The fact of the matter is thats not always possible and you can't just stop living and having fun. Further more the intellectual side of me realises that building a healthy immune system through illness is certainly not a bad thing but I guess witnessing Kal-el's seizure last year sort of made me go into a hyped up protective mode. Nothing wrong with that..I love my children but I'm going to ATTEMPT to relax a little more in regards to childhood illnesses. Better said than done so wish me luck....and to think this all started with a cute little blond that Super chatted up at med plus one Saturday. Maybe the bigger lesson is for Kal-el to watch out for girls. I have a feeling that will be my biggest worry in years to come. Until then I'll lovingly keep wiping little noses and losing sleep!

Christmas Dinner with the Family!

We transferred the fun from our house over to Aunt Shane's at about 1:00 ;) We had such a great time eating, spending time together and exchanging gifts. The only thing missing this year was Aunt Vicki & Harold. Vicki and Kal-el exchanged gifts earlier when they passed this icky virus to each other. Hope your feeling better soon Aunt Vicki!
Super and baby Logan received enough gifts to last the entire year. They are some very loved little boys. But thats not at all what Christmas is about. I feel so blessed to have the wonderful family that I have. Time spent with them is the most precious thing in the world to me and I look forward to every single holiday because it means I get to be around the people I love. I can't wait to see what 2012 has in store for us! God bless and Merry Christmas :)

Christmas Morning 2011!

We had one of the best Christmas mornings ever. We had a lot of things trying to pull against us but we refused to let it take the joy out of this very special day. Kal-el was still a little under the weather with his fever virus and I actually had to go to the ER on Christmas Eve for a sudden raise in my blood pressure for no apparent reason. The doctor assured me that I was fine, contributed it to the stress from the holidays and sick babies and sent me on my way after about 15 min. If that wasn't enough medical excitement Chris woke up with an abscessed, nerve exposed tooth. I felt soooo bad for him. He's eyes were filled with water and I don't think I've ever seen him in that much pain! He managed to deal with it far better than I could of.
I absolutely couldn't wait for our boys to wake up so they could see all the surprises that Santa brought them for Christmas. I even managed to take a little video footage this year. I keep telling myself that I'm going to use the video camera more often but I always forget to pull it out. Kal-el was in awe of his toys when he finally woke up and staggered over to the tree. He hadn't been allowed to touch the wrapped presents until now and he seemed a little overwhelmed and unsure what he wanted to get his hands on first. Chris held Logan is his lap and helped him open his gifts. He was precious. His little eyes lit up and he would grin widely and chuckle at each gift his Daddy tore into on his behalf. Once Super finally got everything opened and ready to play with he ignored most of the bigger and "cool" toys to play with a simple little double sided chalk/marker board and an electric toy drill. I kept telling Chris they we could of spent $40 on Christmas and he still would of been one happy little boy. I love the fact that the simple things brought him so much joy. I can't wait to share the true meaning of Christmas with him when he gets a little older. After Chris and I exchanged our gifts we started getting the boys ready to go over to Aunt Shane's house for Christmas dinner. Since we almost missed it (thanks to all the sickness in our home) I was more grateful than ever to see the rest of our family on Christmas day! Merry Christmas from our family to yours!

Cookies For Santa!

Merry Christmas Eve! We are making cookies for ~~Chris~~ ~~Kal-el~~ me Santa at the Borquez house. :) Candy Cane cookies to be precise. I've enjoyed this recipe since I was a little girl. My mother would bake them for me during the holidays. I think it's a great Santa cookie tradition for my own family to make on Christmas Eve. I had plans for Super to help me make them tonight but my sweet boy is still a bit under the weather and I want to make sure he's well rested so he can enjoy Christmas Day. I thought I'd share this recipe so if nothing else I'd have it on file to look back in the event I forget this basic but extremely delicious cookie recipe!

Ingredients

1 cup butter, softened
1 cup confectioners' sugar
1 egg
1-1/2 teaspoons almond extract....(Ok this is my personal way of making this because I ADORE almond..DOUSE dough with extract like your putting out a fire!!) lol Sorry its that important, a pure drug;)
2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
Red food coloring
1/2 cup crushed peppermint candy canes
1/2 cup sugar

Directions:

In a large bowl, cream butter and confectioners' sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and extract. Combine flour and salt; gradually add to creamed mixture and mix well.

Divide dough in half; add 6-7 drops of food coloring to one half. Shape tablespoonfuls of each color of dough into 4-in. ropes. Place ropes side by side; lightly press ends together and twist. Place on ungreased baking sheets; curve to form canes.

Bake at 375° for 9-12 minutes or until lightly browned. Combine crushed candy canes and sugar; immediately sprinkle over cookies. Cool for 2 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks to cool completely

This is the first batch of the raw dough twists I made. You really need to make the "ropes" a tad bit longer than the recipe indicates of they will be a little too stubby like above.

My favorite part...crushing of the candy canes..great stress relief..yes that's a hammer ;)

Sick Superhero :(

My sweet baby is sick :( If your a mommy you know that its the worst feeling in the world. It started yesterday morning. I awoke to warmer than normal feeling skin on Kal-el's arms. I watch his temperature like a hawk since Super's fever seizure last October so I knew right away he had fever. His auxiliary thermometer confirmed it with a 101 degree reading. He had a small cough to accompany it and after speaking with my Aunt Vicki(who had precisely the same symptoms) I knew that they had both come down with a virus that they must of gotten from our visit to med plus this past Saturday for a minor linear looking rash Webmed convinced me was Scabies. Don't ask lol!
I tried not to worry too much at first. Mainly because with it being viral there was not a lot I could do. Antibiotics of course wouldn't help and my main focus was just keeping his fever down with the every three hour dosing of alternating acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Everything seemed fine until we sat down for lunch. I looked down and saw that he had chill bumps and was shuttering a little. I knew his fever was rising despite around the clock fever reducer. After a few minutes he started acting a little disoriented and actually called me "Daddy" twice. Chris had gotten called out earlier that morning. I immediately removed his food from the table in fear that if he were about to seize I certainly did not want him to choke. I called Dr. Melvin's office and they told me to go ahead and bring him in. He needed to have blood work to make certain we weren't dealing with the flu, step etc. Kal-el loves Dr. Melvin but he was completely lethargic and actually fell asleep only waking up briefly to cry "ouch Mommy" when they took his blood. :( :( :( Dr. Melvin assured me that it was a fever virus and was likely to last 3-5 days with the temperature elevating at night. Since most everything is viral I knew this is what we were most likely dealing with. He also told me that if his temperature got to the 103 or 104 mark that he was actually LESS likely to seize because the spike had already occurred. If your not familiar with febrile seizures then you wouldn't know that how high the temperature gets has nothing to do with the seizure. It's the spike or quick raising of the temperature that a young childs body is not yet acclimated to. Young children have easily triggered immune systems and often get higher fevers compared to adults(they haven't been in practice as long). Most seizures occur when a child's fever goes from normal to just above that very quickly. The majority of febrile seizures occur at 101 or 102. There is no way to prevent them since you can't control how fast the temperature rises. By the time you give a fever reducer the risk of it either happening or not has already passed. Often times a febrile seizure is the very FIRST sign that an illness is about to occur. I never minded seeing fever before I had a child seize from one. A fever is fighting FOR your body not against it. I really feel like parents should be educated on TWO things. The first is that febrile seizures are extremely common and secondly they cause no permanent damage, are not deadly, and children typically out grow them by four, age five at the latest. By that time, their bodies react appropriately to whatever illness they encounter and their little immune systems don't go into "overkill" so to speak. They learn that a few extra degrees of temperature will kill the virus and taking a hammer to a fly isn't necessary! Furthermore just as a fever is a reaction to an illness not an illness or a problem itself per say, similar knowledge can be applied to a febrile seizure. It's like a small shut down or blowing a fuse. The body over reacts to a threat. All similar to defense mechanizes. Sorry for the tutorial, but I get ALOT of unsolicited advice by people that understand it to a much lesser degree or not at all. Prayers are most appreciated. Dr. Melvin sent us home and told me to keep doing exactly what I was doing. He said even if it got higher at night that the hospital couldn't do anything more for the fever part then I was doing with alternating the fever reducers.
Once we got Kal-el home he played for a bit before his fever got the best of him again. Mom strayed with us last night and neither of us slept. Kal-el's fever climbed to 104 at one point but hovered at 103 the entire night. He felt so bad that he really couldn't sleep himself. To make matters worse I accidentally piggy backed the Tylenol dose so I ended up calling after hours. They assured me it was fine and told me to try not to get alarmed unless his fever hit 105. He's virus was playing out just like it was supposed to. The after hours doctor also informed me that the fever could continue to go up at night for the full 3 to 4 nights and dissipate during the day until it ran its course.
By the time the sun rose this morning his fever was back at around 99 to 100. It has pretty much stayed at that until now (4:00pm) as expected. I am just now dosing him. It's not always a good idea to treat a low grade, for one it couldn't potentially increase his seizure risk if I got it that close to normal and it spiked fast in the evening. Also a low grade is effective and doing its job. The viruses and bacteria don't like anything above 98.6 anymore than we do. My hope and prayer is that tonight goes much better and he continues to improve everyday so he can enjoy Christmas morning with his little brother. I miss Logan so much. I am VERY fortunate that I live next door to my grandmother and she has really helped me during this illness. She and Aunt Shane along with Poppa had a little spend the night party with Logan as the guest of honor last night. Hopefully his exposure was kept to a minimal before I got him over there. Positive thoughts that the little one doesn't get this awful virus. I'm also so relieved that my husband will be in tonight. Before I finish making my batch of candy cane cookie dough for Santa tomorrow night I wanted to share a couple of pictures. I'm not a fan of sharing or taking pictures of sick little ones ,however, I had planned to write a post on Kal-el's love for Pluto. I think these pictures explain it all. His stuffed friend never left his side and his mommy won't ever either!

A Visit With Santa!

Today Chris and I broke down and finally took the boys to see Santa. I'll be honest, I've been dreading it just a tad. Santa arrived at the mall on November 18th, thats how long I've been putting this little trip off. The main reason for my Kris Kringle avoidance basically derives from the fact that Kal-el sort of beat him up last year. A quick headbutt barely missing St Nicks face and a slide to the floor while throwing spinning kicks at this "stranger" as he fell to the red carpet below was not my idea of a good time. However, this year Chris was off to take us and Logan deserved to see Santa lol so I prayed it turned out a little better. Kal-el fell sound asleep on the ride over so I crossed my fingers that his temperament would be good in spite of getting woke up from his nap. I was pleasantly surprised when Super actually agreed to sit in Santa's lap in exchange for some candy. The end result is a very mediocre picture of an overly tired 2 year old with his little brother in their regular everyday clothes. I'm still thrilled about it in comparison to last year. No Santa's were harmed in the following photos ;)

Logan's 6 Month's Check Up

Today we took Logan to see Dr. Melvin for his immunizations. Not a fun day for Mommy of course but a necessity for sure. I'll be honest I've never been one of those parents thats gets overly upset by shots. It bothers me to see them hurting briefly but I'm not really one of the parents that cry with their children. That being said let my 6 month old contract the flu or get something terrible that efforts are being made to prevent. THEN you will see the water works. I will admit that it was a little harder watching Logan get his shots than it always was with Kal-el. Logan is just so tender. He cried then made little whimpering sounds. It was pitiful but he rebounded very quickly with the help of his beloved milk. :)
He is almost 20lbs and is in the 75 percentile for height and 90 percentile in weight. So he's still above average in both, just a little more round at the moment thank you very much! He can try lots of new foods since he's reached the 6 month mark. Perhaps he'll enjoy real foods a bit more than his canned baby foods that he really doesn't have a taste for. Mashed potatoes here we come!
Hopefully we won't run any fever for the next few days and can finally make our trip to see Santa. Can't wait to watch our sweet little man as he continues to grow and interact with us. I know this next 6 months will be full of adventures...walking, crawling, talking...I can't wait!! :)

Model Contest Update!

A couple of months ago I wrote a post titled "A Character Building Experience". It was about a modeling contest for the launch of HMP Studio's new website. The contest for the website models was judged via number of votes to decide the winners. I got wrapped up in the whole "please vote for my child" requests and I HATE that. I just feel like it turns what might of been a fair assessment of talent into a complete popularity contest. Since I don't have 5,000 friends on a social networking site on the final day of the contest I'd assumed we hadn't won. As I mentioned in the previous post on this topic, I ended up being more disappointed with the way that I temporarily got so caught up in something so surface for an entire week. Sad and out of character for me but true all the same. I figured it was a character building experience for ME and decided to move on and think nothing more of it. THEN the very same evening the contest came to an end I received a personal message from Heather asking if we could bring Kal-el in for the model shoot. Apparently she had a few favorites and she wasn't going to let lack of popularity votes effect the kids she wanted to use for her website launch. So not only did the 3 children with the most votes get to be a part of the shoot but a couple of others like Kal-el got an awesome surprise! I ADORE her work and when I found out she wanted to do a Superman shoot with him I was over the top :) Chris had the idea along time ago to do this theme but we were trying to wait until Kal-el was older so the timing was perfect. In my book the way this played out is a much more rewarding experience. I didn't manage to rack up thousands of votes for my child but his ability was seen and he was chosen for that reason out of hundreds of children. He did an awesome job at his shoot with a little candy bribing help ;). I'm a proud mommy of my little Superman!

Logan is 6 Months Old!

Half a year already! Logan turned 6 month old today :) He has started lots of new developmental milestones! He pushes himself up on his arms often and kicks his little legs. We may have a crawler on our hands sooner than later. He also babbles and "talks" more than ever and has a constant smile for anyone that looks his way. He also loves to laugh, mostly at his big brother. He's got a raspy little froggy voice just like Super! I will never get tired of saying what a good baby he is. He's such a sweetheart. He looks so much like my baby pictures now that he's a bit older. I'll have to post some comparison pictures soon. He still has a laid back personality and has just now started rolling over on a consistent basis. I attribute this late rolling to not only his docile personality but the fact that he's a lot of baby to roll over :) Happy Half Birthday sweet Logan your Mommy, Daddy, and Big Brother love you to pieces! xoxo

An Early Christmas Suprise from Beth!

A couple of days ago my best friend Beth and Christina came by for a visit :) The three of us practically grow up together and its always so nice to see them even if it's only a few times a year. Beth is expecting her first little one, due sometime in June and Christina has a precious 10 month old little boy named Eli. The boys had a great time getting to know each other as we watched on. Beth told me a couple of weeks back that she wanted to try and get over to give Kal-el's Christmas gift to him. I had hoped we would be able to make a trip to Huntsville to see her but it hasn't happened just yet. There is still time before Christmas and we make take Super to see the galaxy of lights since he is so in love with Christmas lights :) Kal-el also LOVES the gift that Beth brought him. A "Sponge Pants" memory game. She opened it for him and showed him some of the cards. I was a little surprised to hear him call off many of the characters and Spongebob related pictures on the cards. He doesn't watch it all that much( lol I limit it , big time) but apparently he is extremely observant! He very excitedly called off " Spongepants, Sandy, Mr. Krabs, Squidward, Patrick, and even said CRABYPATTY to a card that I was certain he'd refer to as a hamburger. I'd say he's really into it. He has since been carrying the cards about everywhere and has successfully matched them up many times. Logan received an adorable little train, I can't wait until he is able to push it himself! Thanks Aunt Beth! Beth finds out what she's having late January or early February...I asked Kal-el if he thought a boy or girl was in Beth's tummy...he's response "Umm a BOY!" We'll just have to wait and see :)

On December 9th my sweet husband turned a dreadfully old 26 years of age ;) To celebrate, the entire family had dinner at Fiesta Mexicana. We had a great time and this year was extra special because Chris's brother was here to celebrate with us. Five days did not seem like long enough and we have missed Ja- Quawn ever since he left. I think the time they spent together was one of the best gifts my husband could of received. Chris's birthday cakes have always been an adventure for me to have made. Every year I get him an Oregon cake, and almost every year it's been ,well sort of ....mediocre. He is always gracious and says that he loves them but I wanted a cake to finally do our ducks justice. This year I succeeded! I was thrilled with the cake we got from Amy's Cakes. It was adorable and we really had a hard time keeping Kal-el away from it before we cut it. My husband is finally over the mid twenties hump and catching up to his "old" wife lol. He's more handsome than ever and I love him more everyday. He's matured in to such an amazing man and I'm more proud than ever of him. There is no one else on earth I'd rather grow old with. If I searched the world over I know there would not be a better husband, father, or human being to be found. I look forward to giving a little old man cakes with duck mascots on them as I roll around in my hover round with false eyelashes on! lol Happy Birthday Chris "Bear" xoxo I love you dearly :)

Uncle Ja-Quawn Comes For A Visit!

Chris's younger brother Ja-Quawn is visiting us this week to celebrate Chris's birthday. I think it's probably one of the best gifts my hubby could of received. We haven't seen Ja-Quawn since we last visited their hometown of Portland, Oregon a few years back when I was pregnant with Kal-el. Last night was his first time meeting both of his nephews! Chris picked him up from the Nashville airport a little before 7pm. Even though Kal-el had not had a nap the entire day he forced himself to stay awake so he could meet "Uncle Quawn" for the first time. Surprisingly, Kal-el warmed up to him in record timing with only a few minutes of initial shyness. Ten minutes into his arrival he was following him around, asking for him by name, and playing ball with him...so sweet :) Today they are best buddies. Kal-el could hardly wait for him to come down the stairs this morning so he could spend some more time with him. Ja-Quawn is an absolute natural with the boys. He's a fabulous uncle and I know Chris is so glad to finally see his brother after 3 years. We are going to miss him when he leaves next week! Family is so important to me and it's especially important to me that my children know their family in Oregon. I can't wait until we visit this coming fall. In the mean time we plan on having a fun filled week for his first visit to Alabama. Chris's birthday dinner will take place tomorrow night and we have lots of other site seeing to do. He will even get to accompany us in taking the kids to see Santa this year..We haven't really told him how that played out last year with just Kal-el...lol..but at the rate we're going now Super is likely to be on his best behavior for his new best buddy...Uncle Ja-Quawn :)

Being Borquez- Our 3rd Blog Book!

I received our third blog book last month and I love it just as much as our first two books. This book, in particular will always hold a special place in my heart because it documents my entire pregnancy with Logan as well as his birth and follows through his first couple of months with us. This book is also the largest of the three. I was really pleased about having been able to fit almost an entire year into a book. The new features and ability to hold more pictures and pages are a major improvement. One book a year to keep up with instead of two! Even though I love to be able to share our journey with family and friends on line nothing quite measures up to the book itself...in hardback...right there for our children to hold, flip through, and relive fond memories. I'm more happy than ever that I started doing this, documenting our lives and the love we share. I know it probably gets old to everyone around me when we can't go to anywhere without me bringing out the old point and shoot and there are times when I'd rather just completely be in the moment myself. However, the pay off and reward is so great that I will never stop and I hope my children will one day enjoy reading them as much as I've loved writing them and documenting our lives. I feel blessed beyond measure because I'm surrounded by love from my sweet family :)

C is For Cookie- New Traditions!

Today is international cookie day! I don't like to over do it as far as sweets are concerned on a normal day, or week for that matter, so I especially love these when these little mini holidays roll around! They give me a reason for sharing sweet treats with Kal-el. As a matter of fact I've been looking for some fun and unique traditions to start in our family for the holiday season. My children are really too young to fall into "The Elf" craze. Maybe in a few years we can incorporate him, but at the same time I wanted to do a few things that would be unique to our little family. I hope I can think of a few more for this month. I want to keep them small, simple, and sentimental...something that won't be an issue to keep up and something we'll always enjoy. I don't see us outgrowing cookies anytime soon so I think this ones a keeper! Pajamas on Christmas Eve will also definitely be making the cut. We may also pick a few of the classic holiday movies the week of Christmas and watch one a night. Next year I hope to get a little more creative with the cookies and add more personal touches to them. I found out at almost the last minute that today was cookie day so these were store bought but ever so yummy. We will break out the icing kits and variety cookie cutters next year! Just in time for sweet Logan to enjoy them with his big brother. :)

O Christmas Tree(s)!

I started putting up our trees an entire week before Thanksgiving. That has got to be a record for me. Often times I'll procrastinate but this year I really got into the spirit early. As my mom put it "the elf bit me" I know the main reason for my eagerness to get the season started is because Kal-el will be able to enjoy it more than ever this year. He's at such a fun age right now. I also got really excited about he and Logan getting their own Superhero tree. Wolverine and Superman only of course :) Maybe in a couple years we can add a Rogue or Harley Quinn ornament. I was super pleased with how their little tree turned out. I think I ordered all the Superman/Wolverine ornaments that Hallmark makes with the exception of two ornaments which can be a little hard to find!
There's still a good bit more that I want to do with our big family tree in the living room. Mom actually gave me the tree I grew up with which is a beautiful 7.5 ft tall tree. I realized pretty quickly that I needed more ornaments and embellishments because it also happens to be pretty wide but I plan to add a lot more to it next year :) Chris will want to strangle me upon reading this but I'd really like a tree in every room! Ok maybe not the bathroom but for sure our bedroom and possibly the kitchen!I love this time of year. It's so nice in the evenings when the sun goes down and there are warm sparkly lights and glitter everywhere. Ok ok I'll stop. Here are this years trees :)

Happy Thanksgiving 2011

I love this time of year. Thanksgiving is always exciting for me because it officially marks the beginning of the holiday season. Thanksgiving was a little bitter sweet this year. What wasn't missing was great food, fun and laughter with my extended family. The one thing missing this year that would of made it even better would of been if Chris Bear had of been home with us. He got called out on Thanksgiving morning. We had some indication the previous night that he could be getting called right back out based on the call board so we decided to have a Thanksgiving breakfast over at nannies. We barely had time to sit and eat as a family before he had to get on the train. I'm glad we at least got to see him yesterday but I hate so much that he didn't get to spend Thanksgiving dinner with us at Aunt Shane's yesterday evening.
I arrived with my sweet little boys in tow to Aunt Shanes house at about 5pm. Most everyone was already there and we were all ready to dive into the feast. :) Yes I took pictures of the food again this year. We laughed and made jokes about how its my version of a dirty magazine. Leave us hungry curvy girls alone! lol ;) New on the menu this year was the leg of lamb Larry and my mom brought. I'd never tried lamb but I really enjoyed it! When I finally got to sit down and eat that is! Raymond's kids and grand kids joined us this year and Kal-el had a BLAST with the other children! I had to chase him down almost non stop but it was a joy to see him having so much fun. He played hard for at least two hours. I was either chasing him or playing catch up with Zach and Lea for most of the night. I love my family. We said our goodbyes and called it a night when I noticed Super's heavy eyes. I packed up my boys along with their Daddy's big to go plate and we headed home. When I arrived home Chris had already made it to his work destination as well so we talked on the phone for a bit before we fell asleep. This year I am thankful for my husband as well as the rest of my family. It definitely was not complete with an empty chair beside me at the dinner table but I'm so grateful that he's not oversees and I only have to wait one short day to see him and there are also many who have lost a loved one this year. I try to keep everything in perspective that way and I hope my boys will be able to do the same. Luckily, this shouldn't be a trend the longer Chris works there and his seniority builds. We are just thankful that he has a job that enables him to provide for us, many don't have that right now. The way that I always like to show thanks is to give back a little. We'll have to figure out what little project we want to do this year to help others. I want to involve Kal-el as much as possible but I know his understanding might be limited to some degree at this age.
I'm happy to report that we slept in this morning. No Black Friday shopping for us. I would have to be ~~crazy~~ crazier to get out in the droves of soccer moms crawling thru the floors of wal-mart for a $2 toaster ovens. I'm just sitting back this morning eating leftovers in my pj's, watching cartoons with my boys, and laughing at the already surfacing local stories ...tazors and all! Happy Thanksgiving!

Logan is 5 Months Old!

Logan turned 5 months old on the 16th. I'm usually never behind on the monthly age posts but there's a good reason why. I'm crazy. Yes, that's correct. I didn't forget the day was approaching ...I was actually waiting on the 20th of the month. Why you ask..well that was my orginal c section date but Logan came early soooo basically I momentarily mixed up the dates. How sad lol! The worst part is that I didn't even catch it myself Aunt Shane called me last night and ask had she missed Logan's monthly picture! I know its so silly but I kind of went into panic mode. I waited until he was in a great mood this morning, got him dressed, and took some sweet pictures!
Speaking of sweet, not much has changed, Logan is still without a doubt the best baby I've ever seen. I'm not just saying that because he's mine. Sweet Superman was a handful even at this young age but Logan rarely even cries, he still sleeps though the night (7pm-7am), and always has a smile. He's wearing 9 month sized clothing right now. It's crazy that seems small to me but Kal-el was in 12 months at this time. Their my BIG babies :) While Logan may be big he's still not wild about baby food. We have tried several different fruits and he really just doesn't dig any of them. He drinks a TON of milk and that's obviously his preference. Dr. Melvin if he doesn't want it right now then he doesn't need it so we are fine with that. I know some people don't even start baby foods until 6 months of age. He interacts more than ever with his big brother and now Kal-el reacts a lot back to him. Seeing the sweet little bond they are making is priceless for me to witness as a mother. Logan's sweet smile first thing in the morning melts my heart and is little laugh is absolutely infectious. Happy 5 months baby Logan we love you!

Larry's Birthday At The Farm!

   This weekend Chris, the boys, and myself headed out to Kentucky to Larry's farm house to celebrate his birthday with his family. Mom and Larry have been trying to get us to come visit the farm house since they got married back but due to Chris's work schedule we just have not had the chance. Chris was able to take off for a few days so we decided his birthday week would be the perfect time to take the boys. If you know me you know that I'm not exactly the outdoors type and my original plans were just to go and let all the boys have a great time and just enjoy the company but I ended up having such a wonderful time myself that I can't wait to go back! It was so nice to get away from cell phones, facebook, laptops etc and just spend some much needed time together. I don't think Kal-el has EVER had as much fun as he did this weekend. He went nonstop the entire time!
    It's about a 3 hour drive from our house and alot of the drive is through wooded areas, not much street lights etc. Kal-el had a photo shoot Friday afternoon with HMP studios so we didn't head out until after it was dark. Driving in the dark along with not having service on my phone made me a little antsy at first but Chris finally talked me into relaxing and started looking forward to our arrival. Larry has a lot of land ...where deer roam. His son hunts there a lot and Chris somehow got the idea in his head that he may like to attempt to get his own Bambi. :( I can't stand the thought and I made it no secret that if he went I would most definitely be rooting for the deer but at the same I time I thought it would be nice for him to have some male time with Larry and get a break from the girls! :)
   We arrived Friday night at about 8pm. I knew as soon as we walked in that we were going to enjoy our little get away. The farm house is lovely and so home'y' feeling. We all got in our pjs, sat around the fire place, watched tv and snacked on pizza. Larry had some mint chocolate chip cookies for Chris since thats pretty much the only dessert he likes..mint with chocolate. It was super thoughtful and they were so good I even had a few..ok more than a few ;) We turned in shortly after our snacking so the boys could get up early in the morning to go "look" at deer.
   The following morning I realized (after an awesome nights sleep) that Chris and I really need to upgrade to a king sized bed. I managed to get up at 4:30 am right along with the boys. Not the hunters but MY boys. Not sure if the change in environment altered Logan's sleep schedule but he decided he wanted a bottle before the sun rose then Kal-el decided to get up with us. Pretty soon every one was up for the day. I couldn't complain I felt very rested and Logan always ends up going right back to sleep. He never makes a fuss..sweet baby! Mom and I had coffee while Super caught up on some "Sponge Pants". I can NEVER get away from the yellow blob! I loved being out on the serene porch and watching the sun come up for the day while sipping on coffee. Once the Chris and Larry came back to the farm (deerless) a few hours later we took Kal-el driving around the property on the Rhino. If this doesn't tell you how much of a girl I am , I'm not sure what will but when Larry originally told me that Kal-el would probably enjoy the Rhino out at the farm my first response was "Awww what in the world do you guys feed it?" he replied "gas". Poor me LOL He was certainly right about Super enjoying the ride. We really liked it to. After spending most of the day at the farm we decided to let Kal-el pet the sheep, goats, donkeys, and horse down the road. He loved it. One of the donkeys was very loving and tame. He was seriously like a puppy. Adorable! It was too cold for Logan to be outdoors for long so we got back in the car for another surprise stop. We rode by Murray University and on towards the airport. I knew we must be going to see Larry's plane. Larry wanted to "taxi" Super around the airport since worried Mommy here wont actually let the plane, along with a very good pilot do what they were meant to and actually be in the air. Guess who DID fly in the plane though? Nope not me I was too chicken also. Chris, who is even scared of commercial planes when we fly, got on the plane with Larry UP IN THE AIR for 20 mins or longer on a VERY windy day. Talk about brave. The wind was a bit frightening but Chris said he would do it again and he felt like he faced his flying phobia. I was very proud of him! :) After everyone was back on the ground and the color came back to Chris's face we headed back to the farm to prepare for Larry's birthday dinner.
I had really been looking forward to meeting Larry's family. I had the pleasure of meeting Brooke back in April. Kal-el couldn't wait to see her again. Saturday night I got to meet her precious mother Tammy along with Larry's only son Jason and his too cute for words father, known as "Dad Wright". He is 86 years old and is extremely sharp and witty. We had a delicious spaghetti dinner. I had heard about the recipe several times from Larry, its his fathers recipe and its a Sicilian mafia family recipe that he acquired. It was wonderful. Mom baked an equally yummy Italian cream cake for his birthday cake. After we all were so stuffed we couldn't breath we sat around talked, watched Oregon football, and marveled at my firsts borns non stop energy level. He was relentless but sweet Brooke was so patient with him. We had a great time and I hope to see them all again very soon.
    Sunday morning was kind of bitter sweet. My boys needed to get back into a routine but we almost hated to leave. Kal-el adores Larry and I knew it would probably be a difficult goodbye for him. Spending a weekend at the farm and getting to know Larry and his family better was so nice. It may of initially taken us a little while to get to know each other but after having done so we ended up having so many similarities that its unreal! The most obvious one is putting up with my Mother hee hee :) Happy Birthday Larry! Wishing you many more :)

Kal-el Sees Elmo Live!

Yesterday was our much anticipated trip to see Elmo live! It was an adventure to say the very least. My mom and Larry were the very brave souls that accompanied Chis, Kal-el and I to Sesame Street. We left Logan at home snuggled with Nannie and Aunt Shane and made our way to Huntsville for the 7:00pm showing. Kal-el did not get a nap in..yep...that's right NO nap. This should of been a warning of things to come :) Larry (our driver) didn't get to sleep until 3am, my sweet husband just got off a train and had not been to sleep in 24 hours but agreed to come to Elmo Live anyway, and my mom and I were left in the backseat to inevitably have at least some type of quarrel before ever getting off highway 72! Oh boy;) Kal-el was sitting between us playing angry birds. We ended up making it to Huntsville just in time to grab a quick bite at a restaurant. We hurriedly ate what I think was food...its all kind of a blur ..and swiftly headed out towards the VBC. Once we arrived we headed off to find our seats. They ended up being in a great section despite me waiting until less than a week before to order them. When the show started Kal-el was completely mesmerized. He didn't move much the entire first half and really loved it. This made the trip all worth while to me. It wasn't until intermission that the down hill spiral started.
I was hoping everything would go smoothly to prove Chris WRONG that our passionate, emotionally intense, Lauren Jr. of a man child could sit through a 90 min show without incident. Chris even had the nerve to say he thought **I** wanted to see Elmo more than anyone and I was the biggest kid there. How could he say that?! It was Cookie Monster I wanted to see! LOL. During intermission they brought out the infamous $10 Elmo balloons I read about on the online reviews of the show. I must say I didn't think that was an outrageous price once I saw them. For one their mylar balloons and from having MANY of those things at Super's birthday parties they are not cheap even before the helium goes in them. That being said TWO of them does start to get pricey. Which brings us to the balloon drama meltdown...it wasn't pretty. In Kal-el's defense he ~~LOVES~~ ~~ADORES~~ WORSHIPS balloons. I can probably take some of the blame for that due to above referenced birthday parties. Seriously, my child would rather have a balloon then any other toy in the world so when they were passing them out his entire face lit up. Off Larry went to track him down a balloon. Kal-el, being two years old, did not understand the layout of the building (each row of seats has its own door you must enter and leave through, as opposed to exiting down the middle or on the sides) Kal-el thought we were leaving and he assumed since we were going AWAY from the balloons that he was not getting one. HUGE problem for him. He also didn't want Larry to walk off without him. He had a meltdown right there in the hallway. He finally got calmed down when he realized Larry was bringing him the Elmo balloon. Then just as quickly as the moment of tranquility and hope for peace entered it then vanished into thin air...right along with Elmo's gigantic head which was now stuck to the ceiling. Super threw himself to the floor in desperation. Why in the world would they not put something to weigh the balloons down!!! Oh wait I know because they know desperate parents with hysterical children will shell out another $10! Needless to say Kal-el was heartbroken. He cried huge tears over the balloon and had an extremely difficult time reigning in his emotions in the aftermath of his fly away balloon. The balloon seller had already disappeared and the show was starting back so we wearily and very reluctantly went back to out seats. I realized Chris didn't make it back in when I looked over at the empty chair beside me. I snickered a bit and make a joke about him catching a cab home but after a few more minutes I started to worry a little. Then there he was. Headed back into the theater with an arm full of souvenirs including another beloved balloon!!! Yay Daddy to the rescue! Just when we thought everything was going to finely be ok an usher came over and said that the balloon would have to placed under our seat so it would not obstruct anyone's view. Which is fair and makes perfect since, however you try explaining that to a strong willed two year old that just lost one balloon and now assumes he's lost another. Recipe for disaster! It was abundantly clear that Super was getting no more enjoyment out of the show, the people around us probably weren't either so we decided to leave. We made it through all but the last 15 min and I feel like he really loved what he saw so shot nerves and all I'm glad we went. Not sure if sleep deprived Chris or Larry ..who for just a brief moment drove down a one way while Kal-el was distraught in his back seat of his car, would agree! Chris teased me the entire ride home asking me questions like "Did you enjoy YOUR show hunny?" and "glad that went well" LOL As we neared home I blurted out "Disney on Ice is in January!!!" That statement was met with blank stares, an evil expression, and I think I saw a few tears...Parenting is not for the faint of heart..I bet we get a nap in next time! He'll be a little older next time and I'll be bringing Logan by then. Double the excitement!

Today I was boxing some of Super's clothes up and I came across an adorable little Baby Gap shirt that I bought for him when he was a little over 4 months old. Since Logan is exactly that same age now I decided to take a couple of pictures of him in it to see if they look anything alike at 4 months. A few people tell me they think our boys look alike but the largest majority says that while they favor a little as far as their features..Chris's eyes, my lips etc. their overall appearance is nothing alike. I tend to agree. So here they are. They do have one thing in common...just like the shirt says....they are both the little men of my dreams! :)
